| What is Chi ? 什 麼 是 "氣" ? |
Chi is a general word in Chinese, describes the form of energy. Anything moves, grows, circulates can be described as there is Chi within the form itself. |
| |
Chi in the human body can be described as the sensational feeling of how energetic you feel about yourself. if you feel you have lots of energy in your body, you can move a heavy furniture, you can move bags of cement mix, you can do many times of push-ups, you can lift a heavy bike and drop it on your truck....but if you couldn't do all those as you normally can, you describe as yourself lack of Chi. |

Chi in Tai-Chi Ch'uan can be described as the sensational feeling of the energy which circulates in the body, the energy can be moved by the mind and travel outward to reach an object at the far end. The key word is sensational feelings, please don't be mistaken as if there is an actual energy travels out and absorbed by an object. No, there is none. If some one says he has seen a Chi-Kong master uses his chi to move a glass of water on the table or make an object moves, I say, it's a lie, don't believe it. Unless you have seen it with your naked eyes, not from recorded video, image or any form of in-direct translation....don't believe it (I've seen a Chi-Kong therapist uses his chi moved a compass niddle, it's only a magic, I can do that too). |

But, what's the purpose of contemplating the energy travels out of the body and reaches an far end object, the purpose is to let go of the tension completely and no holding back what so ever. By releasing the energy, the muscle releases itself, the body will then be fully stretched and relaxed, you do not retreat the energy, and you let the energy travels to its limit and bounces back towards you. This is essential in the Tai-Chi Ch'uan practice; you MUST absolutely follow this principle through out the exercise. |
| |
When the body is fully relaxed, the blood flow goes to the surface of skin, goes to the finest blood vessels in the body, deep into your brain, into your lung, into your finger tips, into the hard-to-reach and finest area in the body, that makes the Chi going, make the sensational feeling of energy started. So, the true fact is the circulation, a thorough circulation in the body. It sounded pretty simple but the way it works is created by moving the body like the flowing water and breeze in a fully relaxed state, it’s a magic, an Art, and no other exercise is like this. |
| |
So, how do you build up the chi in the body? How do you get this sensational feeling of Chi started? If you answered song--song--song (鬆-鬆-鬆), you've gotten the right answer. You have passed the second test. Remember Tai-Ch Ch'uan started with Song and ended with Song. That's the main core of the whole exercise. Now we can move on to the next discussion -- How to relax the body? |
